For over twenty-five years, Raymond S. Butler has been exclusively employed, first as a law clerk and then an attorney, by law firms focusing their practices in representing plaintiffs (injured victims) in personal injury negligence claims and litigation. Years ago, during his trial experience gained while working in different plaintiffs’ trial firms (varying in size from more than seventy to less than seven attorneys), Raymond S. Butler realized that the only number that is important is the one individual client. Unlike many plaintiffs’ trial firms, the Law Offices of Raymond S. Butler, P.A. does not impose threshold values to potential clients’ personal injury claims before deciding whether to accept an individual's cases for representation. In other words, a prospective client is not turned away from the first free consultation with Mr. Butler with the explanation that her or his injury claim is not large enough in terms of monetary value for this firm to investigate. Regardless whether working on claims such as the Maryland business litigation case that settled for $185 million dollars, trying personal injury, medical malpractice, products liability, and workplace safety cases resulting in death or disfigurement to jury verdict or settlement, or trying Maryland District Court auto and  breach of contract cases without a jury and before a judge, Raymond S. Butler understands that the injured individual client’s claims is important to them regardless of that claim's actual monetary value.

For these reasons, Raymond S. Butler and his law firm represent clients within all of the Maryland District, Circuit, and appellate courts (including the Court of Special Appeals and the Court of Appeals) and within that State’s various arbitration and mediation proceedings. Furthermore, since Mr. Butler is also licensed to practice in the District of Columbia, he practices law within all of the Washington, D.C. courts and arbitration forums. He has appeared within numerous trial courts across this country during his career. The majority of personal injury cases that Raymond S. Butler pursues on behalf of injured claimants (plaintiffs) are handled on a contingent fee basis:

This means that there is no attorney’s fee
paid by the injured client to the Law Offices
of Raymond S. Butler, P.A. unless she or he

first actually recovers money through a verdict
or settlement; during the pursuit of the client’s
case this law firm advances the expenses of
handling that claim or litigation; and this firm
later gets reimbursed for those same case
expenses from the client from their recovery,
plus gets paid for its attorney’s fee from
that
recovery.

At the client’s free initial consultation (conducted either within his law offices or via telephone depending upon the client’s preference), Raymond S. Butler will personally obtain the facts underlying that individual’s claims and then assess the strengths and weaknesses in order to determine if he can represent that person. At no point during a client’s representation is he or she turned over to an associate, paralegal, or assistant. Instead, Raymond S. Butler, Esquire remains intimately involved in that client’s representation on a daily basis leading to its conclusion. This philosophy guiding Raymond S. Butler’s private practice permits him to be extremely selective in the number of clients he represents and the nature of the civil claims and litigation he pursues on their behalf.

In conjunction with his active personal injury litigation practice, Raymond S. Butler also devotes a portion of his practice to pursuing general civil litigation and civil non-litigation matters and issues for clients on an hourly fee basis. These civil matters  range along a very broad and varied spectrum: wills; living wills; powers of attorneys; advance medical directives; formation and dissolution of corporations or companies; corporate matters; commercial transactions; consumer protection; debt collection (plaintiff); debt collection (defendant); real estate; preparation of contracts; preparation of deeds; pursuit or defense of breach of contract claims; installment sales agreements; warranties; affidavits; insurance claims; boundary and/or title disputes; tenant and/or landlord negotiations; leases; alternative dispute resolution; and a myriad of other civil issues and matters confronting individuals during their daily existence. Mr. Butler's hourly fee is similar to those of other Maryland attorneys practicing more than twenty years. As a special benefit to Raymond S. Butler’s present and former clients, he provides a discounted flat fee for the preparation of wills, living wills, powers of attorneys, and advance medical directives as added reinforcement of the importance of these legal instruments.

In the event that the Law Offices of Raymond S. Butler, P.A. cannot aggressively represent a potential client in a legal matter outside of Mr. Butler’s concentrated practice area, he will associate with other experienced lawyers and, if necessary, even refer that client to other more qualified attorneys. The best approach is for the prospective client to call Raymond S. Butler first to consult on that particular legal issue, and he can then draw on his years of contacts and relationships established within the Maryland legal community to offer a recommendation or to make a potential referral.
